A coordinated “call for sites” has been launched by Hastings Borough Council, Rother District Council, Eastbourne Borough Council, Lewes District Council, Wealden District Council and the South Downs National Park Authority. The aim is to identify land that could provide permanent Gypsy and Traveller pitches or Travelling Showpeople plots across the region.
The councils are working together to meet accommodation needs in a fair and sustainable way, ensuring compliance with national planning policy and local housing strategies.
This is a major opportunity for landowners, developers, community groups, and other stakeholders to have land considered for a specific and growing housing need — whether for part of a site or the whole of it.
Why This Matters
- High demand and limited supply – Suitable sites are in short supply, and councils are actively looking for options.
- Small sites can be viable – Even land as small as a tennis court will be considered.
- Potential for long-term, stable use – Successful sites can provide a regular and predictable income stream for landowners.
- Support throughout the process – Each council has a dedicated contact to help guide submissions.
The Deadline
The call for sites is open until 5 October 2025. All sites will be assessed against consistent criteria for suitability.
